Vinyl in Portugal, all systems go
Just back from a break in Portugal and really pleased to see that vinyl is being used throughout the country and in all guises.
Walking through Porto and discovered several great recordstores. One that really impressed was Louie Louie. The store had a brilliant and eclectic range of records, all at very reasonable prices.
In Coimbra bumped into a street seller making artwork from vinyl. The artist used the vinyl to cut out a silhouette of rock icons, all mounted on a wooden board. Slightly sad to see vinyl being cut up, but nice to see it being used.
In Lisbon found several stores, including another branch of Louie Louie. There was a great mix to suit all tastes, including a brilliant selection of singles by The Velvet Underground. I was really tempted but sadly the strict baggage allowance with Ryanair put my dreams on hold.
At the airport in Lisbon meet a young chap carefully holding his first vinyl purchase. The chap found a copy of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon on a market stall and couldn’t resist, despite not having a record deck. He was really excited with his purchase and looking forward to buying a deck.
Really reassuring to see vinyl growing in popularity around the world.
